Last week, I marveled at the chess moves our House and Senate Republicans seem to finally be mastering. You know, the chess moves Trump supporters always see him make, while lamenting the lack of strategy on the part of Congressional Republicans.
Republicans in both chambers forced the Democrats out of their radical closets once and for all. They forced them to the left on not one — not two — but on three major issues.
In the Senate, Never Trumper Sen. Ben Sasse of Nebraska finally did something productive and introduced the Born Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act. Its language was simple. If a baby was born alive after a “botched” abortion, that baby would be considered an independent being with all the rights afforded any other American.
The bill, unlike what liberals claimed, did not come out of nowhere. It was a reaction to the radical sprint leftists have taken on abortion in the last month or so. So radical has their position become, that a recent Marist poll shows Americans are evenly split on abortion – when only a month before, the pro-choice position had a 17-point advantage over the pro-life one. All is not lost: the American people are seemingly quite alarmed at the Democrats’ push towards partial birth and after birth (i.e., infanticide) abortion.
Sen. Sasse wanted to get everyone on the record, loud and clear, to let the American people know where each individual member stood on infanticide. And that’s what this bill was preventing – infanticide.
He got what he wanted. Like cows to the slaughter, one radical Democrat after another stepped up and voiced their OPPOSITION to killing a child after it had been born.
Well played, Senator.
In addition, Senate Leader Mitch McConnell has made it clear he will put to the floor a debate and vote on Democrats’ heroine Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez’s literally insane, $93 trillion Green New Deal. Of course, liberals sputtered and spit about this, and claimed calling the vote was a publicity stunt on the part of Republicans.
But gosh, I thought we only had twelve years left on Planet Earth, according to Ocasio-Cortez and her dead-behind-the-eyes followers. I would think the Democrats would RUN to get on the record supporting a ridiculous, impossible, hilarious financial boondoggle that would take us back to the 17th century – or maybe earlier, if greenies get their way. Let the voting begin!
In the house, I was thrilled to see Democrats once again step up to the radical plate and hit it out of the park when it comes to preferring illegal aliens to American citizens.
Never one to stop a good gun grab, Democrats proposed a bill to require background checks for private sales (person-to-person). In other words, if someone wants to sell a gun to a family member, they would have to pony up and pay for a background check for Uncle Paul or Aunt Susan.
In response to this onerous new regulation curtailing Second Amendment liberty, House Republicans proposed a last-minute, commonsense amendment to the bill. The amendment said: if you are an illegal alien and you attempt to purchase a gun, Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) will be contacted. And guess what happened? Twenty-six Democrats who represent Trump districts defected from the liberal line – and there was hell to pay from their leftist masters!
But wait.
Just when you think MAYBE elected Republicans were starting to get a clue that their voters support the Trump agenda and want ALL the immigration proposals championed by President Trump – including building a wall on our southern border – they revert to resistant, standard form.
President Trump declared a national emergency (that is imminently constitutional) over the southern border – and he will, under the powers provided him in the National Emergencies Act of 1976, divert money from other government agencies to finish the border wall.
Unfortunately, Congressional Democrats (and some Republicans) are passing a bill to rebuke this action.
President Trump said he would veto the bill – but regardless, it’s very illustrative to see who stands for border security and who only gives lip service to the idea. While I understand some Republican recalcitrance is rooted in fear that Democrats will use this act to one day declare the hoax of manmade climate change a “national emergency,” this isn’t good enough reason to not support President Trump. Republicans had TWO YEARS to fund the border wall – and they did not.
Far too many of these people still have no idea what Normal America grapples with every day what it comes to the scourge of illegal aliens. Illegal aliens are overrunning our schools, hospitals, and communities – costing taxpayers hundreds of billions of dollars a year. They often bring drugs, gangs, violent crimes, once-eradicated diseases (whooping cough, polio, and tuberculosis anyone?) and a stubborn refusal to assimilate into American culture. They are pouring over our border with no end in sight.
It’s an infuriating shame they still don’t get it.
But as they say in politics, perfect should not be the enemy of the good. “Silos of perfection” rarely get anything accomplished. I’m glad that on a few issues Republicans seem to understand the necessity to play very visible mind games with Democrats and the media – because it’s far past time liberals are exposed for every mindless proposal they promulgate.
And if we haven’t made it perfectly clear, Republicans –finish the wall. Do it now.
Stand with the one person – the one rebel – who is actually on our side. You will be rewarded if you do – and you will be punished if you don’t.
